Stephen Yates

Stephen Yates is a painter who has lived and worked in the Port Townsend, Washington area for over 40 years. Yates says his paintings seek to suggest a sense of energy and movement in abstract ways by applying layers and accumulations of paint, “which integrate the controlled with the manipulated, the structured with the unpredictable.”

His piece Cosmic Exploration is part of the Juried Group Show in the Red Barn.

In recent work, Yates’ interest has turned towards cosmology with whimsical notions of outer space and forms flying through the universe and beyond. “I hope to manifest unseen energy, with forms immersed in bursts of flickering light and marks suggesting charged fields of activity.”

Yates has participated in over 130 group and 40 solo exhibitions and has work in numerous public and private collections.
